| GENERAL INFO: Jacob’s Well is many things to many different people. To some it is a meeting place for social interaction, to others it’s a homework spot. Some people view it as a music venue while many come simply because it’s a good place to talk and catch up with a friend. Jacob's Well is not a business and might best be described as a "social experiment." It is a collective project designed to create a late-night coffeehouse environment where various forms of service [such as espresso drinks, food, etc.] and expression [such as art, movies, discussion, etc ] may help promote depth and comfort. Our intention is to pierce the shallow consumer culture in which we live so as to benefit from a deeper exploration of both the world we find ourselves in, and also the worlds we find in ourselves.
Every night we offer a variety of coffee drinks, teas, rare sodas, shakes and smoothies. Fresh baked cookies, muffins, scones, etc. are always available as well as simple foods. On a regular basis we also host a mixture of discussion groups, live music, and film viewings.
PAYMENT POLICY: Jacob’s Well is a nonprofit entity, but not being profit-driven doesn’t negate the fact that it takes money to provide all that we offer. Despite the rumors, the items we offer are not “free.” We anticipate comparable donations for our services, otherwise we cannot stay open. All of the funds raised at the Well go back into it to pay for our operating expenses. When consuming our products please consider all that we provide and the regular prices of such services in other establishments. We ask that you pay a comparable price each night you visit us. If you are unsure of a fair price for something, please ask. We consider this to be somewhat of a social experiment and hope that you will honor yourself as well as our donation policy.
COMMONLY ASKED QUESTIONS: Q: “Is Jacob’s Well a Christian Coffeehouse?” A: This has been a question that continually gets asked of us. There are several discussions held regularly at the Well regarding spiritual issues. As an organization we are not out to convert people, we are out to provide a thoughtful and creative environment during the night.
We have found the label to include many expectations and implications that fail to clarify who we are. Generally this label is used in a stereotyping way, either in support for or against us, without providing any real sense of what Jacob’s Well is about. The subject has been very controversial for some people because they are uncomfortable with the way the Well falls on both sides of the description. In the end, Jacob’s Well is a collective project with many people contributing an assortment of different backgrounds and beliefs. By no means do the people involved at the Well all think the same thing, so we have decided that the term is limiting and poor in description, bringing with it far too many preconceived notions, thus we do not use it.
Q: "Is anything happening there tonight?" A: The events at Jacob's Well over the last three years have been many and range in variety from political forum, to drum circle, to techno show, art show, vintage show, film nights, indie rock bands, acoustic music and everything in between. Our schedule is always changing, with the exception of Open Mic night. Sometimes shows are big, sometimes they are little. The best way to stay informed on events is to visit our HOME page on a regular basis, or call us. If you are interested in booking a show please go to the contact page.
Q: "Can I drop my child off there?" A: The simple answer is no. The more complicated answer is that it depends upon the individual. Jacob's Well will in no way supervise your children, please do not assume that this is some sort of "youth group" because of our location next to the church. Generally speaking if someone cannot drive themselves then they are too young.
Q: "How can you afford to do this?" A: Jacob's Well depends upon receiving payment for its various services [coffee, food, different events, etc.], but it also depends upon the generosity of others. By societal or capitalistic measures Jacob's Well should not survive. We are not profit-driven, we do not instill requirements upon patrons, we simply are who we are. Many individuals volunteers, organizations, businesses, and one church contribute to Jacob's Well, without this support we would not be here.
